The 53rd Hong Kong French Film Festival will be held from November 19th to December 10th. This year's French Film Festival will screen nearly 50 films in six theaters, including a variety of classics and new films. There will be 110 screenings in six theaters, including the Hong Kong City Hall, the Hong Kong Film Archive, and MOViE MOViE PACIFIC PLACE , PALACE ifc, Broadway Cinematheque and PREMIERE ELEMENTS.

Promoting French films for 53 consecutive years

Since the establishment and holding of the first French Film Festival in 1953, the French Cultural Association of Hong Kong has been shouldering the important task of promoting French films. It is the pioneer of Hong Kong film festivals and has become the oldest film festival in Hong Kong. Since then, the French Film Festival has continued to bring the latest French films to the Hong Kong public. To date, the French Film Festival has brought more than 2,000 critically acclaimed French films, attracting more than 11,000 movie fans. Every year, many French actors, directors, writers and photographers come to Hong Kong from France to meet with movie fans, conduct Q&A sessions and participate in film festival activities. As an important French film festival in Asia, it relies on the support of multiple organizations, including the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao, the Institut français, local film distributors, sponsors and many other partners.

This year’s film festival brings nearly 50 French films, paying tribute to French film representatives and discovering new film talents. The film selections are divided into three series: Festival Exclusive (Film Festival Selection) showcases 30 new films released this summer or autumn and winter. The film selections are all of high quality and originality, and integrate the innovative trends of current French films; The Retrospective (Retrospective Film Series) ) pays tribute to directors and actors who have had a profound impact on the film industry; the On Design segment includes five films and documentaries about French art and design in fashion, architecture, visual arts and other aspects.

This year’s film festival actively explores father figures, women’s liberation and unyielding contemporary films through its selection of films.

In the focus movies, dramas, biographies and documentaries aired this year, women bravely faced patriarchy, pursued freedom, and disregarded the world. This year's film festival selection focuses on famous French female figures, including modern architect Charlotte Perriand and famous actress Maria Schneider. Director Jessica Palud's biopic "Being Maria" tells the story of young Maria Schneider, played by Anamaria Vartolomei, who is traumatized after starring alongside Marlon Brando in "Last Tango in Paris."
